The mysteries of a legendary gemstone

 2 min

Recently reintroduced at Gemmyo in limited quantities, the sudden success of the Teal sapphire, a mesmerizing blue-green treasure, prompted me to launch an investigation to uncover the mysteries behind this gemstone.

The sapphire is often mistaken for being only royal blue, but upon closer inspection, it reveals a range of hues from pink to yellow, green to clear. April’s birthstone, its name derives from the Hebrew sappîr, meaning “the most beautiful thing.” Not only is this gemstone the second hardest mineral after the diamond on the Mohs scale, but it’s also used in camera lenses and watch crystals. Its scratch resistance and longevity give it an air of timelessness.

My investigation begins with a journey to ancient Persia, where the sapphire was believed to represent the celestial dome floating above the Earth. Persians thought that the sky was tinted by the reflection of this gem, a fascinating discovery that highlights their admiration for this jewel. This cosmic revelation underscores the symbolic role of the sapphire through the ages.

The ancient Greeks looked to the sapphire to seek favors from the gods and oracles, believing these stones were keys to crossing the threshold between mortals and the divine.

In ancient Egypt, the sapphire was revered by the goddess of truth and justice as a precious talisman symbolizing balance in both the living world and the afterlife.

While exploring medieval archives, I discovered that it was associated with the zodiac sign Sagittarius. Astrologers of the time interpreted gems, including sapphires, as vessels of stars and constellations. In medieval astrology, the sapphire was seen as a cosmic mirror, influencing destinies.

In Western Christian contexts, medieval writings reveal that kings, queens, and cardinals wore sapphires to assert their divine connection, authority, and purity of soul. This use of the sapphire as a sacred emblem provides a glimpse into its role in expressing virtue and Christian faith. Today, it symbolizes loyalty and is often chosen for engagement rings.

Speaking of iconic rings, this case led me to a 12-carat Ceylon sapphire once worn by Princess Diana. This jewel has since become a symbol of royal elegance, making sapphire the top choice for the 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries. Intrigued by this information, my jeweler’s instincts tell me your own anniversary might be approaching… the perfect opportunity to acquire a sapphire. Consider this your excuse to treat yourself or be treated—you’re welcome!

I digress a little, but let’s return to the legendary origins of our corundum (the term for both rubies and sapphires, linked by their chemical compositions). Continuing my research, I ventured to Sri Lanka, formerly known as Serendib, where sapphires have been celebrated for centuries in the tales of Sinbad and the writings of Marco Polo. This name gave rise to the word “serendipity,” which refers to the art of making a fortunate discovery by chance. Today, Madagascar has emerged as the world’s top sapphire producer, offering an unmatched range of colors and quality.

As rare as they are captivating, the Teal sapphires selected by Gemmyo are an exception, hailing from Tanzania. Some sources suggest they have an astronomical connection. They can display an optical phenomenon called asterism, where a six-pointed star appears on the stone’s surface when cut en cabochon and exposed to direct light.

These enigmatic stories transform our precious suspect into a symbol of power, mystery, and eternal beauty. As my investigation, which feels more like a journey, draws to a close, it becomes clear that this gemstone, with its many facets and enchanting legends, remains one of the most fascinating jewels.
