The blue-grey sapphire becomes a permanent gemstone

 2 min

There are stones that had eluded us for a long time before being tamed.

After four years of work, the blue-grey sapphire now joins the range of our permanent gemstones.

In 2021, a lapidary we know well laid out several batches of sapphires in front of Charif and me. Nothing extraordinary at first glance, until our eyes were drawn to an intriguing lot. They are sapphires… but which ones? Too grey to be blue. Too blue to be Teal. An indefinable color. Foreign to the standards of classic jewelry. A stone that no House has ever really listed.

Yet something happened at that moment.

This deep, almost stormy blue, with misty-grey highlights… It’s the depth of the ocean we were seeing.

The dealer admitted that he couldn’t find any takers for these few dozen stones. But Gemmyo does know how to honor such opportunities! So we took a risk and decided to buy the lot. We named it “blue-grey sapphire” and chose to make this singular stone a limited edition immersed in color… until the photoshoot on the Côte d’Albâtre, a few kilometers from Étretat, where rock and water merge into a single reflection.

When it was launched in September 2021, it was an immediate success.

Within days, our stock was sold out. And the requests came pouring in: “When will the blue-grey sapphire return?”

We then launched a vast exploration: gemologists, traders, sapphire specialists… They all told us the same thing: yes, this color does exist, but always in homeopathic doses, in rare and scattered lots.

For a year, we tracked down every available stone. Each time we restocked, the pieces were sold out in just a few days. And always the frustration of not being able to meet the demand. Until the day we made a decision that would change everything: Gemmyo would become the reference for blue-grey sapphires.

An ambition, a dream, a gamble

To achieve this, we knew there was only one solution: go back up the entire supply chain, identify the source of raw crystals, take a major stock risk, and organize their cutting. In short, set up a tailor-made, owner-driven supply.

This gamble took us two years. Two years sourcing, cutting, sorting and calibrating thousands of stones. Two years of meticulous, demanding and patient work.

But today, we’re there.

The blue-grey sapphire has finally joined the Gemmyo collections on a permanent basis.

Available in round, oval, pear and cushion cuts, it can now be set on over 70 Gemmyo designs.

Today, we are proud to say that Gemmyo has become the world reference for blue-grey sapphires.
